knowledge zone - Brian Hubbs

A FREE lunchtime webinar on glazing performance, IGU failures, and façade risk mitigation with one of North America's most experienced façade engineers. Learn from real case studies and take practical lessons back to your next project. Includes live Q&A. Earn CPD and LBP points.

Description

Glass that breaks, seals that fail and how to stop both

Hard lessons from North America's most complex glazing projects

Insulating glass units are central to high-performance glazing and also one of the most misspecified components in a building façade. Brian Hubbs has investigated glazing failures across hundreds of buildings in North America: spontaneous breakage, IGU seal failures, optical distortion, solar thermal stress and more. This is a forensic session built around real case studies. It covers what goes wrong, why it keeps happening, and what smarter specification and quality assurance actually looks like on the ground.

   WHAT WE WILL TALK ABOUT

  • How building movement and interstory drift affect facade and glazing systems and what the facade has to accommodate
  • What causes spontaneous glass breakage and why heat soak testing reduces the risk dramatically
  • The IGU seal failures Brian sees most often and the edge seal details that prevent them
  • How spandrel panels and shadow boxes create thermal conditions that push IGUs beyond their durability limits
  • What to look for in IGU certification, labelling, and fabrication quality assurance before problems appear on site

We’ll wrap up with a hosted Q&A, giving you the chance to dig into key takeaways and clarify your own projects.

SPEAKER

Brian is one of the founders of RDH Building Science and one of the most respected names in North American façade engineering. Over decades he has led the design, testing, and forensic investigation of building enclosures across hundreds of projects. He has shaped building enclosure policy and research in British Columbia and is known for translating complex technical material into things practitioners can actually use.
